Notes | Botetourt County (VA) Public Schools The School Board of Botetourt County (VA) Public Schools invites applications for the position of Superintendent. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025. THE COUNTY Botetourt County is located in southwest Virginia and lies in the Roanoke Region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located in the mountainous portion of the state, the county is bordered by two major ranges, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 546 square miles, of which 541 square miles is land and 4.7 square miles is water. The Blue Ridge Mountains run along the eastern part of the county, while the Appalachian Mountains run along the western portion. The two mountain ranges come close together, separated by the town of Buchanan and the James River. Botetourt County is part of the Roanoke Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the county seat is the town of Fincastle. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 33,596.
THE DIVISION Mission: It is the mission of Botetourt County Public Schools to ensure that all students participate in quality learning experiences necessary to grow, to adapt and to meet the challenges of responsible citizenship in a changing global society. Leadership and Management Skills – The successful candidate is a decisive leader and team player who is organized, efficient, and analytical. Personal Characteristics – The successful candidate is confident, consistent, patient, flexible and accountable. Board-Superintendent Relations – The successful candidate provides options and recommendations before accepting board directives, is willing to assume the lead role while keeping the board informed, effectively mediates and accommodates different perspectives, and presents a united front. Staff Relations – The successful candidate effectively delegates tasks, creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, and maintains open communication. Community Relations – The successful candidate effectively advocates school issues and needs, maintains visibility in the community and responds to concerns in an appropriate manner. School Finance – The successful candidate identifies programs for increased funding/budget cuts, develops and explains the rationale for the budget to the board and local officials, and lobbies for school funding on behalf of the school division. Areas of Expertise – The successful candidate has expertise in budget and finance and facility planning and construction. Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a superintendent in Virginia.
