Announcement of Superintendent Search

The School Board of Craig County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent. 

The County
Craig County is a rural county located in the western portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia, situated north of the City of Roanoke. As of the 2010 census, the estimated population of Craig County was 5,030, and the county covers a land area of 330 square miles.

One notable feature of Craig County is the large amount of land that is covered by the Jefferson National Forest, which comprises nearly two-thirds of the entire county. The forest includes portions of the Appalachian Trail, providing ample opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking, camping, and nature watching.

The Division
Craig County Public Schools is in rural Virginia, serving a total of 515 students across three schools. McCleary Elementary is the largest school in the district, with 240 students in grades PK-5, while Craig County Middle School serves 105 students in grades 6-8, and Craig County High School has 170 students in grades 9-12.

The mission of Craig County Public Schools is to instill a love of learning and prepare students to become responsible, contributing members of society. The district's vision is to provide a challenging and rigorous educational program that promotes the development of critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and citizenship. The school division employs a total of 113 staff members, including both professional and support staff. The district has a graduation rate of 92%.

The operating budget for Craig County Public Schools is $8,357,641 which is used to fund programs and initiatives to support student learning and success.

Qualifications

  • Reside within a one-hour drive of the school board office, living within the district is preferred.
  • Successful experience as a principal, demonstrating effective leadership and management skills required.
  • Have a proven track record of successful teaching experience, with a strong understanding of instructional practices and curriculum development required.
  • Successful experience as a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent is preferred, highlighting the ability to oversee district-wide operations and initiatives.
  • Exhibit a strong record of successful experience in school reform, instructional strategies, curriculum development, and staff development.
  • Demonstrate decisive leadership, effective teamwork skills, and a track record of creative leadership.
  • Possess excellent communication and advocacy skills, capable of inspiring community confidence and effectively addressing school issues and needs.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to lobby local officials for school funding and other necessary resources on behalf of the school division.
