Bath County Public Schools Announcement of Superintendent Search

The School Board of Bath County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent.

The County

Bath County, Virginia has established itself as a frontier for good fortune. Located in the west-central portion of Virginia, Bath County has long been recognized as a major resort center in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of Virginia. Bath County encompasses 540 square miles of mostly mountainous terrain. There are five election districts within the county: Cedar Creek, Millboro, Warm Springs, Williamsville, and Valley Springs.

The Schools

The Bath County Public Schools serve approximately 476 students from kindergarten through grade 12 in two elementary schools, one high school, and one vocational center. Each school is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education and is characterized with a low student to teacher ratio. The school is supported by a staff of 124 people.  The current 2023/2024 operating budget is $11,477,586

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Successful experience as a Principal and Teaching experience is required.
  • Experience as a Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or Central Office administrator is highly preferred.
  • Strong record of successful experience in school reform, instruction and curriculum, human resources, personnel, and school finance is preferred.
  • Residency in the school division is preferred.                                                                             

After gathering input from Board members, parents, staff, students and community, the Bath County School Board seeks the following qualifications and characteristics.  

  • A decisive leader, motivator, and team player who is comfortable with shared decision-making.
  • A good listener who is accessible, consistent, caring, and presents a positive attitude.
  • Effectively mediates and accommodates different perspectives to Board before accepting Board directives, understand differences between policy and administration and acts accordingly, provides options, and makes recommendations to Board before accepting Board directives.
  • Ability to create an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, supportive of staff development activities, encourages professional growth, and maintains open channels of communication to and from staff.
  • Ability to effectively advocate school issues and needs and respond to individual concerns in an appropriate manner, communicates effectively on both private and public levels.
  • Lobbies for school funding on behalf of the school division, develops and explains the rationale for the budget to the board and local officials, closely supervises budget development and procedures, and identifies programs for increased funding and/or budget cuts.
  • Candidate has expertise in curriculum and instruction, and school reform (strategic planning, total quality management, etc.), and community relations.
