The School Board of Prince Edward County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent.

The County

In 1754, Prince Edward County was founded in the heart of Virginia. In 1865 the closing days of the American Civil War took place at the Battle of High Bridge and less than 100 years later in 1951 students at the Robert Russa Moton High School led a fight for civil rights in education. Home to 22,000 citizens, the county offers a rural, progressive lifestyle, a vibrant arts and cultural community, and a flourishing downtown shopping district. America’s first two college town with Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College provides ample college athletics opportunities. The county is also the only one in the state to have three state parks within it providing an abundance of outdoor recreational offerings.

The Division

Prince Edward County Public Schools consists of one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school (including a career and technical center), with a total enrollment of 1816 students for the 2023-2024 school year. The division has an on-time graduation rate of 88%. The school division employs a total of 288 full-time staff members, including both professional and support staff. The operating budget for Prince Edward County Public Schools is $31,757,712.

Qualifications

After gathering input from board members, parents, staff, students, and the community, the Prince Edward County School Board seeks an educational leader with the following qualifications and characteristics:

Education and Training:

  • Required: Experience as a Principal
  • Preferred: Experience as a Superintendent or Associate/Assistant Superintendent
  • Required: Successful teaching experience, with preference for experience in primary and secondary education

Leadership and Management Skills:

  • Decisive and visionary leader
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Team-oriented, comfortable with collaborative decision-making
  • Skilled motivator

Personal Characteristics:

  • Approachable and a good listener
  • Accountable, confident, and caring

Board-Superintendent Relations:

  • Skilled at balancing differing perspectives and keeping the board informed
  • Leads the board in goal-setting and strategic planning

Staff Relations:

  • Fosters a culture of mutual trust and respect
  • Maintains open communication channels
  • Has effective processes for recruiting and selecting top-quality staff

Community Relations:

  • Advocates for school issues and needs
  • Engages effectively with parents and community members
  • Inspires community confidence

School Finance:

  • Champions school funding initiatives
  • Communicates budgetary needs effectively to the board and local officials
  • Diligently oversees budget development and financial procedures

Areas of Expertise:

  • Curriculum and instruction
  • Strategic planning and continuous improvement
  • Staff development and evaluation
  • Budget and finance
  • Residency in Prince Edward County is preferred.
