Leadership and Management Skills: The successful candidate is a team player who is comfortable with shared decision-making. He or she is a decisive leader, a visionary and a creative thinker. Personal Characteristics: The successful candidate is a good leader who is accessible, caring and consistent; confident and accountable. Board-Superintendent Relations: The successful candidate mediates and accommodates different perspectives, understands differences between policy and administration and acts accordingly, and is willing to assume a lead role in decision making while keeping the Board informed. Staff Relations: The successful candidate creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, maintains open channels of communication, and sets a good example for staff members. Community Relations: The successful candidate effectively advocates for the school issues and needs and communicates effectively on private and public levels. He or she responds to individual concerns in an appropriate manner; promotes business and community involvement in schools. School Finance: The successful candidate lobbies for school funding on behalf of the school division, offers creative funding solutions and develops and explains rationale for the budget to the Board and local officials. Areas of Expertise: The successful candidate must have a willingness to develop and expand expertise in budget and finance, curriculum and instruction, and school reform (e.g. strategic planning, innovation, technology, etc.) Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a superintendent in Virginia.
